Why a Space Saving Bed Isn't Just for Small Spaces

When most people think of a space-saving bed, they imagine a small apartment with a cheap Murphy bed. While there are indeed small apartments out there, such as in New York City, a space-saving bed can also benefit larger bedrooms.

A Murphy bed is a wall bed stored along or inside a bedroom wall and is pulled down. They're often thought of as a cheap option for a room too small for a permanent bed fixture. However, a space-saving bed can offer additional function, storage, and more.

Here's why you should consider a Murphy bed as a bedroom space-saving option.

Murphy Bed Pros and Cons

While bedrooms are primarily for sleeping in, most people use them as a living space as well. As such, they're always looking for how to save space in the bedroom without compromising on style and function.

One of the most obvious benefits of a Murphy bed is how little space they take up. There are options for wall-mounted beds as well as cabinet storage. You have more freedom to utilize your bedroom for other activities than sleeping.

Modern Murphy beds also come in a variety of newer options. You can find cabinet beds that are made of quality materials that also offer functionality. Some have outlets installed so you don't have to sacrifice access to a pre-existing wall outlet.

A con of space-saving beds is that not all mattresses are compatible. You can't choose your own headboard or base to pair with it.

There's also the issue of linens and pillows. If you like using a lot of pillows, you may not have space in a storage drawer for them. A folding bed won't play well with thick sheets and comforters.

Even though space-saving beds can be stored away, you don't need to put them away every time you get up in the morning. That way, you don't have to worry about relocating your blankets and pillows.

Murphy Bed Installation

Some Murphy beds require some kind of wall fixture to mount on when you're not using them. However, there are newer options that don't require mounting and allow you to move them around the bedroom. As such, they don't require any actual installation.

One thing to remember when choosing a Murphy bed style is that your mattress options have to match it.

A heavier mattress won't work well with a wall bed. If you go for a smaller cabinet-style Murphy bed, then you'll have to get a folding mattress.
